The “House of St George” is one of the best rock hewn Churches in Lalibela and is carved out of the solid rock in the shape of a cross, with the roof at ground level.
It is an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Most of Lalibella’s eleven monolithic rock hewn Churches are in groups, but Bete Giorgis stands by itself, west of the stream named River Jordan.
The Church is thought to have been constructed during the reign of King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, of the late Zagwe dynasty, and has been dated to the late 12th or early 13th century.
