Established in 1906, Mesa Verde National Park was created to preserve and interpret the archaeological heritage of the Pueblo people lived in these dwellings for over seven centuries (c. 600 to 1300 AD). 
There are nearly 5,000 known archaeological sites which are protected by the park, which include some 600 cliff dwellings.
